GATLA Clinical Exam Process
A brief description
Generally, the exam is about 60 – 75 minutes in all.
- Maybe 10 minutes for the introductions and the expectations
- 30 – 45 minutes for work
- Feedback for the client from the examiners (if any), 10 minutes
- Client leaves and time to discuss the work with the examiners (10 – 15 minutes)
- You leave for a few minutes while the examiners confer
- You return and get feedback
The clinical exam is a more technically challenging situation from a practical point of view because of the current Coronavirus pandemic and may also bring special matters to the situation that you might need to consider while doing the work (the strangeness of telehealth therapy, familiarity and comfort with the context for both therapist and client – the therapeutic process may be same in both online and face-to-face work, but the content may be significantly impacted by the context, etc.).
Your client will receive feedback from the faculty/observers immediately after the therapeutic session if they want this and will then leave. You will then have an opportunity to discuss and critique your work with the faculty who may have questions for you. You will be “invited” to leave the faculty to deliberate and discuss their feedback that they want to offer you and the outcome will be given to you immediately afterwards.
